The test last 11 – 14 minutes and is divided into 3 parts.

Part 2: You speak about a topic for 1 – 2 minutes

Preparing for the IELTS Speaking Test

If you only had 15 minutes to prepare for the IELTS Speaking Test, I would say the best thing you can do, is to do an IELTS Speaking Practice tests, like the ones at the bottom of this page.

To prepare for IELTS Speaking, you should get familiar with the topics and kinds of questions you will be asked in the test.

What’s more, you should practice speaking out your answers to those questions.

I do not recommend writing out your answer, and then reading it out, or memorising it and then reciting it from memory.

That won’t work, and you will get a low score, because you need to speak natural, conversational English in the IELTS Speaking test.

To help you prepare, I have made a series of videos where I act as your examiner.

You can watch and then practice responding to my questions.

This has several benefits. It will

  • make you think quickly
  • build your flexibility and fluency
  • get you used to the timing of the test
  • get you familiar with the test format
  • build your confidence
