The Chunking Method is a simple technique that can dramatically improve your fluency — and it takes just 5 minutes a day.
Fluent speakers tend to think in ready-made phrases, called chunks.
This is not true all the time – sometimes we think in words, but often we think in chunks (sounds).
Think of them like little ready-made pieces of language.
Instead of picking up Lego blocks one by one, if you pick them up in blocks, it’s easier and quicker.
It’s the same when speaking English.
Once you have these chunks in your brain, speaking becomes faster, smoother, more natural.
The 5-Minute Fluency Drill
- Pick one chunk, practise saying it as one sound (e.g. I tend to)
- Add some words, to make simple examples (e.g I tend to get up early)
- Repeat with 2 or 3 chunks
- Put them together in short phrases
- Create a mini-story (it can be illogical)
- Create a mini-story (try to say something true for you)
Simple Examples of Chunks
Chunk #1:
- “I tend to… do” (habit)
I tend to – wake up early
I tend to – have a big breakfast
I tend to – drink tea
Chunk #2:
- “I’m used to… doing” (familiar action)
I’m used to – getting up early
I’m used to- working -on my own
Chunk #3:
- “I find it easy to… do” (natural skill)
I find it easy – to cook
I find it easy – to learn languages
Combining Chunks
Let’s match verb chunks (3 above) with adverbial chunks (3 below)
Adverbial Chunks
- At the moment
- By and large
- Right now
Combining Chunks
At the moment, I tend to wake up early.
By and large, I find it easy to stay focused.
Right now, I’m used to working long hours.
You can now practise lots of different combinations with the Chunking Toolkit below

Types of Chunks (with examples)
A. Adverbial Chunks (Time / Frequency / Situation)
- At the moment…
- These days…
- By and large…
- From time to time…
- Right now…
- Every now and then…
- On the weekend…
- Most of the time…
At the moment, I’m trying to improve my daily routine. These days, I wake up earlier, which really helps. By and large, I feel more organised, but from time to time, I still oversleep. Right now, I’m focusing on building better habits. Every now and then, I take a break and go for a long walk. On the weekend, I usually relax with friends. Most of the time, this routine works well and keeps me motivated.
B. Habit & Tendency Chunks
- I tend to… do
- I’m used to… doing
- I find it easy to… do
- I’d like to… do
- I often end up… doing
- I have a habit of… doing
I tend to wake up early, even when I’m tired. I’m used to doing short workouts in the morning, so it feels natural to me. I find it easy to stay focused once I’ve had a coffee. I’d like to do more reading this year, but I often end up doing something else instead. I have a habit of checking my phone too much, so I’m trying to change that.
C. Opinion & Feeling Chunks
- To be honest…
- Personally, I think…
- In my opinion…
- As far as I’m concerned…
- The way I see it…
- I feel that…
To be honest, mornings are my favourite time of day. Personally, I think they give me a fresh start. In my opinion, waking up early is one of the best habits you can build. As far as I’m concerned, it makes everything easier. The way I see it, you don’t need motivation — just a routine. I feel that even a small change can make a big difference.
D. Discourse Chunks (Signalling new ideas)
- The thing is…
- It turns out that…
- Actually, the truth is…
- The problem is…
- On top of that…
- By the way…
(Note: These must appear at the start of an idea.)
The thing is, I thought I could manage everything easily. It turns out that I needed a better plan. Actually, the truth is, I was trying to do too much at once. The problem is, when I get busy, I forget to rest. On top of that, I start feeling stressed. By the way, I finally bought a planner to stay organised.
E. Reason & Result Chunks
- because…
- since…
- as…
- which means that…
- so… that…
- as a result…
I changed my routine because I wasn’t sleeping well. I wake up earlier since it helps me feel more productive. I drink less coffee as it makes me calmer. I exercise daily, which means that I have more energy. I go to bed earlier so that I can rest properly. As a result, my mood and focus have improved a lot.
F. Expansion & Addition Chunks
- and also
- also…
- as well…
- plus…
- on top of that…
I start my morning with a walk, and also I listen to a podcast. I also stretch for a few minutes. I drink water after waking up as well. I make a quick breakfast, plus I prepare my lunch for later. On top of that, I try to read a few pages of a book before work.
G. Story / Narrative Chunks
- I remember one time
- I remember thinking
- At some point…
- After that…
- In the end…
I remember one time I went out walking and got caught in a storm. I remember thinking this is a really bad idea and I should go home. At some point I realised it could be dangerous, especially after the lightning started. After that, I decided to go home. In the end, I got back safe and sound.

FAQs
The Chunking Method is a way of learning English by focusing on ready-made phrases instead of single words. Fluent speakers often think and speak in chunks like “I tend to…” or “At the moment…”, which helps them speak faster and more naturally. By practising these chunks as one sound, your fluency improves without overthinking grammar every time.
Yes. Short, daily practice is more effective than long, irregular study sessions. A focused 5-minute drill helps your brain automate common patterns, so they come out naturally when you speak. Over time, these small daily habits build confidence, speed, and smoother speech.
Absolutely. Chunking is especially useful for IELTS Speaking because it helps you:
speak more fluently
sound more natural and confident
