To succeed in the IELTS Speaking test, you need to speak confidently about a wide range of everyday topics. The list below shows the most common topics you may face in 2026 across Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 of the test.

Research shows that vocabulary is best learned in context, which is why preparing by topic is one of the most effective ways to improve your speaking score.

Word lists can be useful, but only when the vocabulary is supported with clear examples and real speaking models.

Frequently Asked Questions

You need everyday, natural vocabulary that helps you talk clearly about common topics such as family, work, hobbies, education, technology, and travel. You don’t need rare or overly academic words. Focus on useful collocations, topic vocabulary, and high-frequency idioms that sound natural in conversation.

IELTS Speaking topics change over time, but the most frequent ones include:

  • Family & relationships

  • Work & studies

  • Hobbies & free time

  • Travel

  • Technology

  • Food

  • Books & films

  • Cities & the environment

  • Health

  • Daily routines

The most effective way is to learn vocabulary by topic and in context. In addition, don't just memorise words, practise saying them aloud in short phrases.
Learn the common collocations of each new word you learn. Here’s a simple method:

  1. Choose one topic.

  2. Study vocabulary with examples and model answers.

  3. Watch a video to hear the language used naturally.

  4. Write down new words and chunks (collocations).

  5. Practise using them in your own answers.

  6. Review your vocabulary once a week.

Not really. Examiners expect clear, natural, flexible vocabulary that converys the exact meaning you intend,  not complicated or obscure words. Band 7 and above requires you to:

  • use a range of appropriate vocabulary

  • use words accurately

  • show some idiomatic or less common expressions

  • avoid over-repeating the same basic words all the time

Natural communication is probably more important than impressive vocabulary.

It depends on your level,  but I wouldn't focus too much on the number of words you learn.

As a guide, aim for around 8 to 12 words or chunks plus any idioms that feel natural to you.
You don’t need long lists.

It’s better to:

  • learn fewer words well and use them confidently

  • practise them in real sentences and answers so you are activating them

Follow the Speaking Success System and you will be fine: Discover → Practise → Review.
