Study Plan for IELTS Speaking

To make a super simple study plan for IELTS Speaking, you need to decide,

1. What you need to improve

2. How you will do that

3. When

Here is a very simple example

This needs just under 2 hours of study / practice a day.

  1. Improve fluency (TOTAL 25 minutes a day)

Have a weekly conversation class (speaking partner, teacher, friend)

Listen to some simple audios everyday.

Practice repeating key phrases 10 minutes a day

Try responding 10 minutes a day

Work on shadowing 5 minutes a day

2. Improve vocabulary range (TOTAL 40 minutes a day)

Choose a theme each week.

Listen to 30 minutes of a podcast twice a week (on that theme).

  • Listen for gist (to extend passive vocabulary)

Spend 10 minutes watching some videos (on the same theme) everyday.

Watch again and make notes of new vocabulary for 20 minutes

  • Make a note of phrases, not single words.
  • Instead of writing word lists, record phrases that you can listen to many times.
  • Listen when walking, in your commute, when at home cooking…
  • Repeat the phrases, and practice making up sentences to practice them

Study vocabulary from your course book for 10 minutes everyday.

  • Read, listen and note useful vocabulary
  • Note phrases, not single words.

3. Improve grammatical accuracy (TOTAL 40 minutes a day)

Use your course book 15 minutes everyday, focusing on grammar.

For 15 minutes everyday, watch the same videos as above again (on the same theme), but focus on grammar.

Spend 10 minutes analysing transcripts /subtitles and underline grammar structures.
