How Jason Improved from Band 6.5 to Band 7.5 in IELTS Speaking

Student Overview

  • Starting level: Band 6.5
  • Target: Band 7.5
  • Biggest challenge: Overthinking while speaking, lack of consistent speaking practice, and balancing study/work commitments
  • What helped most: Structured practice from the Gold Course, imitation of model answers, recording and analysing his own speaking, and better time management
  • Result: Band 7.5 in IELTS Speaking

Watch Jason share his experience in his own words:

The Story

The Problem

Before preparing seriously, Jason often struggled with speaking fluently under pressure. He tended to overthink while speaking, which affected his fluency. He also had a very busy schedule due to his medical studies and career plans, which made it difficult to consistently practice speaking.

What Wasn’t Working

Jason had tried preparing in different ways, but without a structured system, his practice wasn’t consistent enough. He realised that simply trying to “think more carefully” while speaking actually made things worse, as it reduced his fluency and natural flow.

What Changed

Everything changed when Jason started using a more structured approach through the IELTS Speaking Success Gold Course. He focused on:

  • Repeating and imitating model answers
  • Practising pronunciation by copying native-like speech
  • Recording his own speaking and listening back to identify mistakes
  • Speaking more naturally instead of overthinking
  • Managing his time better by cutting out unnecessary activities

He also realised that improvement comes from consistency rather than intensity.

The Result

After consistent practice, Jason improved his IELTS Speaking score from Band 6.5 to Band 7.5.

He also achieved strong overall results in his exam:

  • Listening: 8.5
  • Reading: 7
  • Writing: 7

More importantly, he became significantly more confident in expressing himself naturally in English.

Useful English from this story

  • “It’s a matter of time” improvement happens with consistent practice
  • “Put in the effort” to work hard consistently
  • “Overthinking will kill fluency” thinking too much reduces speaking performance
  • “Go with the flow” speak naturally without forcing ideas
  • “Manage my time wisely” organise time effectively for practice
  • “Remove unnecessary things” eliminate distractions to focus on priorities

What you can learn from Jason

  • Speaking improvement comes from structured, regular practice, not memorisation
  • Confidence improves when you speak more and analyse your own mistakes
  • Overthinking is one of the biggest barriers to fluency
  • Simple, natural English is more effective than complex, forced language
  • Time management is key when preparing alongside work or studies

Speaker 1:

Hello! Today I have a great interview for you. It’s with my student Jason from India, who’s going to tell us how he went from a 6.5 to a 7.5 in IELTS Speaking. Hello! It’s Keith from English Speaking Success and the website The Keith Speaking Academy, where you become a confident speaker of English. I’m very excited today. It’s another IELTS Speaking success story. It’s an interview with one of my students from the Gold Course, Jason Anudeep, and he is from southern India. He trained as a doctor in China, in Chongqing. He has studied in Leeds, in England, and now he wants to go and work as a doctor, possibly in the UK or possibly in Canada. He followed my online course, the IELTS Speaking Success Gold Course, worked all the way through it, completed the whole course, and managed to move up from a 6.5 to a 7.5 in IELTS Speaking.

He tells us a bit about himself, his journey, the challenges, why he’s taken IELTS, and also some tips and advice for other students getting ready for the test. I think this will be an inspiration and motivation for a lot of students. I hope you enjoy it. Let’s get straight into the interview with Jason.

Hello, Jason.

Speaker 2:

Hi, Keith. Nice to meet you here. I’m fine, thank you.

Speaker 1:

Great. Lovely to see you. I hope you’re well as well. Tell me, where are you now?

Speaker 2:

I’m right now in Ushakpur, my hometown in India. It’s in the southern part of India, in a state called Andhra Pradesh.

Speaker 1:

Great. Tell us a little bit more about yourself and why you took IELTS.

Speaker 2:

I was interested in working as a doctor abroad, and I also tried to migrate to Canada as a PR holder. Those are the two reasons I took IELTS. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to meet the requirements for working as a doctor, but I met the requirements for getting PR in Canada in the General Training module.

Speaker 1:

So does that mean you’re going to move to Canada in the future?

Speaker 2:

Not really, because I still need a job offer or recent work experience as a doctor. I’m still trying, but it’s difficult to be honest. I also have other plans, like maybe going back to the UK to work as a doctor.

Speaker 1:

You mentioned you’ve been in Leeds and studied there, right?

Speaker 2:

Yes, I did my MSc in Leeds.

Speaker 1:

How was living in Leeds?

Speaker 2:

Leeds is a great place. I really enjoyed living there. It’s very vibrant, and I like the culture, the people, and the atmosphere of the city.

Speaker 1:

I also noticed you studied in Chongqing. Is that right?

Speaker 2:

Yes, I went to China for my medical studies back in 2007 and graduated as a doctor there.

Speaker 1:

Why did you choose Chongqing?

Speaker 2:

It was one of the options I got. It was the most affordable place for my family. We also had a contact through a friend of my father. I chose Chongqing because I liked the vibrant city life, the tall buildings, and the busy atmosphere.

Speaker 1:

Do you speak Chinese?

Speaker 2:

Not much, but I can understand and speak a little.

Speaker 1:

Why did you take IELTS?

Speaker 2:

For Canada, I needed General Training. For working as a doctor in the UK, I took the Academic module four times.

Speaker 1:

Four times! And what result did you finally get?

Speaker 2:

In May this year, I took the General Training test and improved my speaking from 6.5 to 7.5. I got 8.5 in listening and 7 in both reading and writing.

Speaker 1:

What challenges did you face?

Speaker 2:

The main challenge was finding time to practice, revise grammar, learn vocabulary, and put in consistent effort.

Speaker 1:

How did you practice speaking?

Speaker 2:

I followed the course videos, repeated after you, and tried to imitate pronunciation. I also recorded myself speaking and listened back.

Speaker 1:

Did recording yourself help?

Speaker 2:

Yes, it helped a lot because it allowed me to identify mistakes and improve.

Speaker 1:

Did you use the speaking practice rooms?

Speaker 2:

I wanted to, but I focused on finishing the course first. By the time I finished, I didn’t have much time left to use them.

Speaker 1:

What advice do you have for students?

Speaker 2:

Don’t be stressed or overthink the exam. Just answer naturally using appropriate vocabulary and grammar. Practice consistently and speak naturally.

Speaker 1:

Any final advice?

Speaker 2:

Overthinking reduces fluency. Just speak naturally. Some people may need practice to reach that stage, but the key is to focus on what you want to say and express it clearly.

Speaker 1:

How do you manage your time?

Speaker 2:

I remove unnecessary activities and focus my time on practice and learning.

Speaker 1:

Quick questions—beach or mountains?

Speaker 2:

Beach.

Speaker 1:

Tea or coffee?

Speaker 2:

Coffee.

Speaker 1:

Films or books?

Speaker 2:

Films.

Speaker 1:

If IELTS were a food?

Speaker 2:

A dessert, because even when you’re full of knowledge, you still need to make space and work hard to pass the exam.

Speaker 1:

Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I’m sure it will inspire many students.

Speaker 2:

Thank you. It was a pleasure. You’re very inspiring, and I really enjoyed your teaching.

Speaker 1:

Take care and good luck. Bye-bye.

Speaker 2:

Zàijiàn. Thank you.

FAQs

It depends on consistency, but many students can improve their overall speaking skills significantly in 3–8 months with regular, structured practice.

Yes, but you need a structured system, regular speaking practice, and self-review methods like recording yourself.

Focus on daily speaking practice and correcting your own mistakes through recording and review. Discovering new language through video model answers is a good technique, as this not only creates context, but also helps you grow more familiar with IELTS Speaking answer format, and the natural spoken English you need for IELTS.
